Three Types of Transmission Modes for Screw Air Compressors – Let’s Find Out!
Today we will explain the three different transmission modes adopted by screw air compressors.
1. Belt Drive
Engineers shall regularly inspect the wear condition and tension of the drive belt. Improper tension adjustment will accelerate belt wear or cause breakage.
To check belt tension, press the middle section between two pulleys with a thumb force of 40 N. The proper deflection is generally 10–15 mm.
When inspecting belt wear, apart from checking abrasion and aging on the working surface, attention should also be paid to the outer flat surface of the V-belt, which shall protrude at least 1–2 mm above the pulley rim. If not, the belt has reached its wear limit and must be replaced.
For replacement, high-quality belts of identical model must be replaced as a complete set. Otherwise, uneven force distribution during power transmission will lead to premature damage.
2. Gear Drive
In this transmission mode, the compressor cylinder is coupled to the engine cylinder or gearbox, and driven directly by engine gears.
If the air compressor fails and requires disassembly for maintenance, gear wear and meshing clearance must be inspected, together with the fastening condition of gears. Any defects found shall be tightened, adjusted or replaced promptly.
3. Coupling Drive
For air compressors equipped with coupling drive, power can be output from the rear of the fuel injection pump, or connected to the engine timing gearbox.
Inspection can be carried out while the unit is stationary: verify whether the connecting disc is securely fastened and check for obvious looseness when rotating by hand. No abnormal noise shall occur at the coupling, bearings and other components during low, medium and high-speed operation.
