Under What Conditions Should an Air Compressor Be Stopped in an Emergency?

What is the function of the emergency stop switch next to the control panel of a screw air compressor? As the name implies, the emergency stop switch is mainly used to handle emergencies.
When the air compressor is in a dangerous state or a sudden failure occurs during production, timely shutdown and inspection are mandatory to avoid further damage. Pressing the emergency stop switch cuts off the power supply and halts equipment operation, protecting personnel and equipment safety.
When to Trigger Emergency Stop
Press the emergency stop button to shut down the air compressor under the following conditions. Do not restart the unit until the root cause is identified and the fault is eliminated.
Current or exhaust pressure suddenly exceeds specified values;
Water-cooled air compressor suffers sudden loss of cooling water and interrupted cooling supply;
Water temperature or oil temperature of any compressor component exceeds allowable values, and the automatic control system malfunctions;
The air compressor generates abnormal noise, such as metal collision noise, loose connections, or damaged components including cylinders, cylinder heads and bolts;
Lubricating oil pressure drops sharply or oil supply stops unexpectedly;
Severe gas leakage occurs during air transmission of the compressor;
The motor produces violent vibration or burning odor;
Sudden abnormal weather causes water ingress into the compressor station, or other surrounding emergencies take place.
How to Perform an Emergency Stop
For emergency shutdown, the unit can be stopped directly by pressing the Emergency Stop button without prior unloading.
After shutdown, exhaust residual air inside the system until pressure drops to zero. After the unit stands idle for a period, drain condensate from the oil-gas separator tank, oil cooler and aftercooler. In cold winter environments, this prevents frost cracking and corrosion caused by low temperatures.
Inspection and Record Requirements after Emergency Stop
It is recommended to document the cause of emergency shutdown in writing for maintenance reference. The records shall cover:
Shutdown time and shutdown type;
Preliminary assessment of losses caused by emergency shutdown;
Preliminary judgment on the root cause of the emergency incident;
Matters requiring assistance and emergency rescue from relevant departments;
Estimated time for restoration or rush repair.
How to Reset after Emergency Stop
How to reset the air compressor after emergency shutdown?
If the emergency stop switch is engaged: Rotate the switch clockwise to check whether it pops out. Replace the emergency stop switch if it fails to rebound.
If resetting fails when attempting to start the compressor after long-term idle storage: It can be preliminarily judged that the emergency stop switch is open-circuited or the emergency stop control circuit has poor contact. Replace or repair the emergency stop switch.
